Calendar view

Calendar view is one of the types of Views available in Dabble DB. It is only available when your application contains fields with date/time values. (You must tell Dabble that a field contains a date/time value using the Field configuration).

When a calendar view is available, you can open it by clicking on the calendar tab at the top right of your view.

Once the calendar is open, you can switch between monthly, weekly and daily views by clicking on the appropriate link or by typing a particular date into the Jump box.

You can add Filters as you would on the table view.

Switching between calendar views

From monthly view

Click on an individual date to see it in daily view. Click on a week number to see it in weekly view.

From weekly view

Click on the name of the month shown above the week to switch to monthly view. Click on a day of the week to switch to daily view.

From daily view

Click on the name of the month or week number shown above the day to switch to the monthly or weekly calendar respectively.

Jumping to a specific date

Type a date into the box beside the Jump button. Dabble will switch to whichever view is appropriate for the date you type and show you that date.

For example:

  • Typing “January 2006” will switch to monthly view
  • Typing “February 1, 2006 - February 7, 2006” will switch to weekly view
  • Typing “March 1, 2006” will switch to daily view

Dabble also understands relative dates:

  • “last month”, “this month” or “next month”
  • “last week”, “this week” or “next week”
  • “tomorrow”, “today” or “yesterday”

If you save a view with a relative date in the jump box, it will always show you the current date — so “today” will always mean the day that you are looking at the view.

Links to entries and showing their details

The calendar will show a link to each entry that includes a date in the time period you are viewing. Each link will show the entry’s name, and will also show the details of any columns you have added in Table view.

If you wish to change what details are shown for each entry, click the table view tab, add or remove columns as needed, then switch back to calendar view. If no columns are included (or only the summary column), then the calendar will show only the entry’s name.

Note: the width of your browser window may limit the amount of text that can be shown in any one box. If you leave your mouse hovering over an entry, a note should pop up showing all the details.

Adding new entries

You can add a new entry to the calendar using the Add new entry on box on the upper left corner. Type the date on which you wish to add an entry and it will be created according to whatever Filters you have on the view.

You can also add a new entry with a set date and/or time by clicking the green plus that appears when you hover over a particular box on the calendar. In monthly view, you can add an entry to a particular day, while in weekly and daily view, you can add an entry to a particular day and time.

Monthly view

The monthly view shows you an entire month’s worth of data. Entries with a single date value will appear as a link on that date. Entries with ranges that span more than a day will appear on all of those days. Clicking an entry will open the entry editor.

By default, the monthly calendar will show only up to 5 entries on one day (to stop the calendar from becoming too big). You can change this limit using the box at the bottom of the monthly view.

If there are more entries on a day than the limit, you will see a link (e.g. ”… and 4 more”) which will switch to a daily view so you can see all entries.

Navigating between months

In addition to the jump box (see above), you can go backwards (left) or forwards (right) by a month using the single blue triangles beside the name of the month. The double blue triangles skip to the same month in the previous or next year.

Weekly and daily view

Weekly view

The weekly view shows you a week of data. Normally this is a calendar week starting on Sunday or Monday (depending on your Locale settings), but you can also create a weekly view for any period of 7 or fewer consecutive dates. Type the range of dates into the Jump box (e.g. “January 1, 2006 - January 4, 2006” or “June 29, 2006 - July 4, 2006”) and click Jump.

You can navigate to the previous or next week using the left and right blue triangle links.

Daily view

The daily view is nearly identical to the weekly view, but shows only one day of entries. This is useful when your entries have a lot of information and you need more space to show the details.

You can navigate to the previous or next day using the single left and right triangle links. The double left and right triangles will navigate backwards or forwards by a week.

Time of day on weekly and daily views

If an entry does not include a time, it will be shown in the All Day row. If it does include a time, it will be shown to start at the appropriate hour (or half-hour). If the entry includes a start and end time, then the entry will be shown spanning the appropriate number of hours. (Find out more about date/time values.)

You can set the start and end of the day by clicking on the Time column header, choosing Set start time or Set end time, and then the time you want. (Dabble will not let you set the end time to be before the start time, or the start time to be after the end time.)

Note that an entry will not appear on the daily or weekly view if its start/end time places it before the start of the day or after the end of the day.
