Merge fields

You can merge two Fields together to combine existing Field values into one new value. This may be useful if you Import data that has fields or columns with smaller components than you need (e.g. a person’s name is split into “First Name”, “Middle Name” and “Last Name” but you only want one “Full Name”), or if you decide to reorganize existing data in some way.

Merging fields affects all Entries that contain the two fields.

Not all types of fields can be merged. You can only merge fields that belong to the same category even if the fields are present on the same entry.

  • You can merge one text value into another. The merged field will contain the text of both fields combined. If you choose, you can insert punctuation or other text between the merged values.
  • You can merge Link to entry and List of entries fields with each other. The merged field will always be a list of entries containing the combined list of entries linked or listed in the original fields.
  • You can merge one duration value into another. The merged field will contain the sum of the two durations.
  • You can merge a duration value into a date and time value. The merged field will be a date and time value, with the amount of time in the duration added to the original date and time. For example, merging a duration field containing “5h00” (5 hours) with a date and time field containing “January 1, 2006 5:00 AM” will result in a field containing “January 1, 2006 10:00 AM” (5 hours after the original date and time).

How to merge two fields

  1. Edit an entry containing the two fields you wish to merge. The fields must belong to the same category.
  2. Click the name of the field you wish to merge to open its menu. The order of the two fields affects the operation. The merge operation always merges one field into another. The field whose menu you opened will be merged into the other field you select in step 4.
  3. Move your mouse over Merge field into to reveal the submenu.
  4. Click the field you wish to merge into. Only the fields that can be combined with the first one will be available.
  5. A dialog box will open showing the details of the merge. For merging text fields, you can choose what text to insert, if any, between the value of the first and second field. The default is ”, ” (a comma followed by a space), but you may edit this as you like, or disable it. Below, Dabble will show you a preview of how the merge will take place using the entry you’re editing as an example. The Before column shows the two fields as they exist currently while the After column shows the new field as it will exist if you complete the merge.
  6. Click the Merge button to complete the merge, or click Cancel to exit without doing anything.

Once you complete the merge, the first field will disappear and the second field will contain the combined field values.

If you make a mistake, you can use Undo to reverse the merge operation. In the case of Text values, you can also use Split field to divide a merged field back into two separate fields.
